June 22nd - And Then There Were 10!
It was quite the day with 7 new butterflies! Watch the videos to see what happens.
June 21st - Now we have 3!
The 2 new butterflies are drying their wings. The red liquid is called meconium and it is the leftover part of the caterpillar that was not needed to make the butterfly. This is stored in the intestine of the butterfly and is released after the butterfly emerges.

Caterpillars Are Changing Into A Chrysalis!
A caterpillar will shed its skin several times before forming a chrysalis. The black fuzzy balls are the caterpillar's skin. If you see the red balls that is a sign that our caterpillars are done eating and will be making their way to the top of the lid. We have 9 caterpillars in the chrysalis stage right now!

June 11 - Webs
The caterpillars are starting to spin a web. The webbing protects the caterpillars from many dangers. Caterpillars use the webbing to stick to their host plants, as the wind can easily blow them off the leaves. Caterpillars also use the silk to pull leaves around themselves to hide from predators that might like to eat them.

Zoom Meeting 9
Today was our last Zoom Meeting for the year. I want to thank all the families for logging their children into our meetings. I appreciate your support and cooperation. It was a great way to connect and learn about each other. It was definitely a learning experience for me and although it often sounded and looked like chaos there was a lot of fun and laughter. The videos will be great memories and we can look back and say...remember when we had to zoom.. :)

June 9th - The Caterpillars Are Growing!
They have almost doubled in size! The little balls are caterpillar waste. It means our caterpillars are eating and growing! If you see black fuzzy balls appear inside the cup that is actually the caterpillar’s skin. A caterpillar will shed its skin several times before forming a chrysalis. I removed the waste so they could have easy access to the food.

Friday, June 5th - Caterpillars Have Arrived!
The caterpillars are in their 2nd instar, which means they have shed their skins once. The food is an artificial insect diet made for multiple species of butterflies. The diet consists of toasted soybean flour, stabilized wheat germ, sugar, vitamins and mineral salts. They are only 1 cm long. It will be fun to watch them grow.
